Nutritional Tips

Through this simple and quick advice, you can start to eat more healthily. A good diet is the basis of a full life.

  • Include more fibre in your diet. Prepare pea, corn, lentil or chickpea soups and add these ingredients to your salads and stews. Opt for wholemeal breads and cereals.
  • Pulses: chickpeas, dried peas, lentils and beans are a good source of fibre, proteins and carbohydrates. They are also very low in fat and cholesterol, so should be included more often in the diet.
  • Read food labels. It's important to know the expiry and manufacture dates and the nutritional content.
  • Include a variety of fruit and vegetables in your diet. Cook vegetables with the least amount of water possible, because it dissolves certain vitamins and minerals. If you cook them with a lot of water, re-use the water as stock for other dishes. Eat more raw vegetables and raw fruits with the skin on, as this will provide you with more vitamins, minerals and fibre.
  • Take maximum advantage of the nutrients in potatoes. Try to eat them with this skin on as this contains more fibre, minerals and vitamin B complex than the potato itself.
  • Breakfast should be the most important meal of the day and should contain the most calories, so as to start the day with enough energy for all that we need to do. This is especially true for children as it is proven that school performance is better in children who eat a good breakfast.
  • Remove fat from food: take the skin off poultry, remove that fat from red meat and ham, skim off the layer of grease that floats on the surface of soups and casseroles. The dough used in pastries and cakes is a source of carbohydrates but often contains unhealthy fats and so these should be eaten in moderation.
