Hunger is one of the most serious problems affecting the world today, aided on by the high cost of foodstuffs and the International economic crisis.

According to a FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Agency) report, over 1,000 million people are afflicted by hunger today, which is equivalent to almost one sixth of the global population.

Towards the end of 2008, the Academic Center for the Fight Against Hunger at the public University of Buenos Aires (UBA) made a cross-data investigation based on reports by UNICEF Argentina, the National Health Ministry and the Provincial Governments which revealed that in Argentina, 8 children under the age of 5 die every day from malnutrition.

In view of these facts, we cannot remain indifferent; we must act. As Philosopher Enrique Valiente Noailles expressed during our IX Annual Dinner, held on August 27, 2009: “putting an end to hunger should be the major objective of an action network and of public and private awareness; top priority on the collective agenda”.

The results of the survey conducted by the Argentine Food Banks Network on a sample of 1,000 organizations that work with the Food Banks, 32,2% of the organizations have experienced a fall in their resources during the last 6 months, and 54% have observed an increase in the demand by families and individuals during that same period.
